General FAQ

What orientation does the inscription card go in?

The Author chooses the orientation and points it out to the Experts.

Can I use arrows? Numbers? Drawings?

Explicitly, no. Drawings that are recognizably either pictures (like a drawing of a horse), or can be interpreted as a 'existing symbols' (think arrows, stick figures, etc.) are not allowed. However, you can try and find a middle-ground where you make a marking that resembles both a horse and the style of the inscription, if that would help you.

Do I really have to come up with new symbols?

Likely, yes! Any time you use a part of the Inscription in one of your translations, it si a way of saying the Experts are 'warmer' to the meaning, while including things that you invent or make up suggests 'colder'. IF you consistently use a made up symbol in any guess involving people, for example, you can teach players that 'people' is not part of the meaning. This is a critical piece of the magic of Rosetta and what it is trying to do: Make sure you are being consistent for your own rules you make up, and you'll be surprised what people can come to understand.
