Welcome typesetters!
This is the FAQ and puzzle repository for TYPESET. If you have a question about play, see below for more information if we have answered it before. Otherwise try to reach out to us via our contact page, social media, or post on BoardGameGeek. We can then update that information below.
Included is also a list of all 25 abilities with additional notes, sorted alphabetically.
FAQ
-
If an ability makes an empty space in a word, do I fill that space next? or to the right of the letter(s) I placed further right?
If an ability creates an empty space in a word, that empty space is still the 'left-most space'. It must be filled as normal, left-most first, at all times unless an ability says otherwise (like Justify).
-
Can I place vowels in a row that has no consonants?
You may place vowels at any time during your turn in any row with an empty, left-most space. You can place them alone in a row just because, or to affect an ability or attempt to finish a vowel column and gain a wild letter, and so on.
Ability Cards
-
Baseline
This may be used to move one or more letters, even if they are not adjacent to each other. For example, you can move the first and last letter to another row, but they remain in the same order and slide to the left.
-
Capitals
Mark the row with an asterisk. You can do this before having placed any letters. You can still use words that are not proper nouns in these rows. You can even mark them all immediately for an early wild letter.
-
Case Lay
You may use this ability when placing a consonant or a vowel.
-
Chart
This effectively allows repeat usage of turn letters from previous rounds, which means this ability cannot be used in the first round (no sorted turn letters).
-
Chase
This may allow a letter to be placed in any space in the bottom row, for example.
-
Composing Stick
You may use this ability when placing a consonant or a vowel, including letters placed prior to the current turn.
-
Corrections
This allows for skipping a turn letter without taking an error or placing it, but you will 'lose' two vowels that don't get placed.
-
Drop Cap
You may duplicate the letter above or below the other. This can be done with letter placed prior to the current turn.
-
Galleys
Mark the row with an asterisk. You can do this before having placed any letters. The word can still be shorter. Use the empty space to the right of the seventh space for the eighth letter. You can even mark them all immediately for an early wild letter.
-
Gauges
You may use this ability when placing a vowel or a consonant.
-
Justify
Mark the row with an asterisk. You can do this before having placed any letters. This can be done even after already placing some letters. You can even mark them all immediately for an early wild letter.
-
Kerning
You may use this ability when placing a vowel or a consonant.
-
Leading
Set the tile face-down where it is easy to access in case any other player also wants to look at it this turn.
-
Letterspace
This can be done in a row with any number of letters in any order.
-
Ligatures
You may use this ability when placing a vowel or a consonant.
-
Minding
You may use this ability when placing a vowel or a consonant. There is some creative leeway here. Be forgiving of the interpretations of others! They can only do it three times total after all.
-
Nicks
This effectively allows repeat usage of turn letters from the current round. Once letters are sorted into the mat after the round ends, they are not available any more.
-
Proof
This allows for skipping a turn letter without taking an error or placing it, but you will be unable to add any more letters to a selected row. It cannot be used on a row with no empty spaces, or the same row multiple times.
-
Quads
This allows for moving one or more letters in a single row to the right, even if those letters are not adjacent or were placed in previous turns or rounds.
-
Ragged
You may use this ability when placing a vowel or a consonant. This effectively allows you to place 'one space in' from the start of a row at the time of placing the letter.
-
Slurring
You may use this ability when placing a vowel or a consonant. There is some creative leeway here. Be forgiving of the interpretations of others! They can only do it three times total after all.
-
Thin Space
Mark the row with an asterisk. You can do this before having placed any letters. This can be done even after already placing some letters. You can even mark all the rows immediately for an early wild letter. It can now contain two smaller words when scored. The words are scored as a larger one- to the column the word reaches, rather than individually. You do not have to choose where the two words are 'divided' until scoring. If either word is incomplete, the whole row is scored in the negative.
-
Translation
Mark the row with an asterisk. You can do this before having placed any letters. This can be done even after already placing some letters. You can even mark them all immediately for an early wild letter. You can still have a correctly spelled word in this row. Be forgiving of the interpretations of others! They can only do it three times total after all.
-
Typo
This can be done with any placed consonant or vowel, even from previous turns or rounds, but the space must be filled in this same turn.
-
Widow
This effectively allows repeat usage of turn letters from previous rounds, which means this ability cannot be used in the first round (no sorted turn letters). The letters become available once all the spaces on the mat are filled. You cannot use this ability after the letters are sorted but before deciding to score. You must continue to the next round to use the ability.
